SPA Esperance Port Berth 2 Demolition

Located 720km southeast of Perth, Esperance Port is a pivotal trading hub connecting key Regional WA industries to their markets around the world. With the modernisation of shipping methods and key upgrades planned, the long redundant 4,000tph minerals ship loader and conveyor system needed to be removed from Berth 2. CareyMC were engaged by Southern Ports to undertake this Class 1 Demolition works. Carey teamed up with CPC Engineering to provide SMP services for the project.

The scope of works included;

  • Dismantling and disposal of the existing berth face Shiploader
  • Dismantling and disposal of feed conveyor galleries and transfer towers
  • Modifications and strengthening of gallery trestles to provide adequate support to retained Sulphur import system.

The project resulted in the demolition of over 520 tonnes of fabricated steel structures rising over 28 meters in height.

In addition, the retention of the Sulphur Import System allowed CareyMC and CPC Engineering to demonstrate their capabilities to perform shutdown services to conveyor systems; with the shortening of the conveyor and installation of a new tail end gallery completed under tight permissible outages.

The team worked closely with Port operations to ensure project activities could proceed smoothly without any adverse effects to shipping operations. Disruptive works were planned around the shipping schedule and a detailed traffic management plan was put in place to permit landside transport logistics to continue at the port unhindered.

The project showcased the ability of CareyMC and CPC Engineering to work together to deliver a complex project on time and on budget in difficult circumstances
